Whiskey, Watches, and Watch Winders

Wolf Meridian Macassar Humidor Editorial Pic

For this month’s Whiskey, Watches, and Watch Winders, we’ll discuss versatility. At TimeScape, we’ve noticed that the best watch winder brands are diversifying and making it easy for customers to integrate a wood watch winder into their home's decor. This is exciting news as it’s reinvigorating what a watch winder is capable of. We’ll talk about three current popular, customizable products—Swiss Kubik Masterbox watch Winder Collection, Underwood customized safes, and the Wolf Meridian Collection. But first, let’s talk about a brand we’ve always been vocal about enjoying.

Macallan in the News

Speaking of versatility, Macallan has been in the news recently for the development of two new whiskeys, making waves for being popular with both ends of the financial spectrum.

Macallan 40 Year Old Whiskey

The Macallan 40-Year Old, a rare treat from the brand, is being sold via virtual ballot draw. It will cost about $6,100, well worth it considering this is only the second time a Macallan 40 Year Old has been released outside of  a vintage release.

The Macallan Double Cask is a new venture, aging the whiskey in both European and American oak barrels. Because the American oak softens the flavor profile, the new drink is designed to be more appealing to younger drinkers. Early buzz is positive and the product should be instrumental in introducing the joys of whiskeys to new generations.

Introducing The Swiss Kubik Solaire: The Green Single Watch Winder

As time moves forward, technological advances in horology are setting new standards for premium timepiece maintenance. After all, investing in a work of precise engineering means more than just the initial cost. For true aficionados, procuring the best single watch winder for their the watches in their collection is a way to keep their timepieces moving effortlessly.

Why Watch Winders?

A watch winder is recommended for automatic timepieces you don’t intend on wearing on a regular basis. Since their inner mechanisms are based on the movement experienced through the machinations of your daily activities, an automatic watch that isn’t worn frequently may wind down. So, if you have a few watches in your collection, it could benefit you to invest in a watch winder in order to help them keep perfect time.

The Swiss Kubik Solaire

Introduced earlier this year, the Swiss Kubik Solaire is already among the best single watch winders on the market. As Swiss Kubik’s premier innovation in watch-winding technology, the Solaire utilizes solar energy or interior lighting that measures at least 600 lumens. With Swiss Kubik’s reputation in the premium watch industry, the Solaire is recommended for the precise mechanics of the finest automatic Swiss watches.

The Solaire’s sleek, contemporary design is expressed through a monochrome cube measuring 10 cm across its 6 sides. Weighing in at 26.5 ounces, it can fit discreetly within a drawer or safe, or can be displayed prominently on your desk or mantle.

With the ability to maintain 1900 rotations per day, the Swiss Kubik Solaire runs 950 of its daily rotations clockwise and 950 counterclockwise. Additionally, the Solaire is a fully-integrated 21st-century convenience with USB computer compatibility that allows for personalized and individual programming based on the number of rotations you’d prefer and how often you wear your automatic watch. Residing somewhere between essential and complementary, the Swiss Kubik Solaire is by far the best single watch winder available and is a must for collectors everywhere.

Eco-Friendly Watch Technology

With energy efficiency in mind, the Swiss Kubik Solaire is powered by two 1.2 volt rechargeable batteries. With a full charge, these batteries can last up to eight months without exposure to light. The life expectancy of the batteries is approximately ten years, after which the batteries should be replaced to guarantee proper and efficient use of the Swiss Kubik Solaire. If kept in an environment with low or partial light, the battery’s power reserve will vary in accordance with the intensity of the available light. Rechargeable batteries use 23 times less non-renewable resources than disposable batteries and the lack of battery disposal equates to 28 times less of an environmental impact on climate change.

Invest In The Future

You went to extreme lengths in selecting and purchasing your timepiece; don’t let the physical restriction of automatic movement hinder your enjoyment of it. While a Swiss watch is indicative of culture, status, and education, it also denotes a sense of pragmatism for professionals with busy schedules. Lives and careers don’t always afford the time to move in the frequency and manner conducive with winding your automatic watch. So,why not make the most of the time you have and capitalize on the beautiful design and Swiss precision of the best single watch winder on the market? Time is what you make it, and the Swiss Kubik Solaire helps you elegantly and effectively seize its opportunities.

How the Swiss Cornered the Watch Market

Elevated view of Lucerne, SwitzerlandThe rise of
luxury Swiss watch brands is generally accepted and often remains unchallenged, as fine, luxury timepieces are known internationally as synonymous with authentic Swiss watches. So how did the Swiss corner the watch market? Geographic, cultural, and technological factors each play an important part in the story of how the Swiss became the world leaders in creating perfected pieces of chronometry. However, the seeds of what would become the illustrious history of Swiss watches begins with, of all things, trousers.

The First Watchmaker

The practice of timekeeping has been around for millennia. Ancient Egyptians used the obelisk to track the sun, candle clocks were used in ancient China and Mesopotamia, and water clocks used in third century Greece. It wasn’t until the 16th century that a German artisan created the first portable timepiece.

Henlein, a locksmith and clockmaker who lived in Nuremberg, specialized in miniature clocks that could be worn as pendants or fastened to clothing. As the Germans and the Dutch led the revolution in horological technology, it would be nearly 300 years before the Swiss would challenge the chronograph supremacy of their European neighbors.

Fashion, Innovation, and Geography

The end of the 18th century brought about increased industrialization and the inklings of mass production that would sweep through the civilized world during the Industrial Revolution. As a result, the sleek European fashions in clothing—exemplified by trimmer trousers—became more precise in cut and widespread in use, like the current authentic Swiss watches. This move toward sophisticated, thin-line clothing cuts created a demand for thin, elegant accessories. Clunky pocket watches from English and French manufacturers no longer suited the fashion of the day, as they used bulky calibers that essentially made them miniaturized clocks.

Enter Jean-Antoine Lepine, Abraham-Louis Breguet, and Frederick Japy. Lepine and Breguet, on the French side of the Jura mountains, were both inventors of significant resources. Lepin’s caliber allowed a thinner watchcase to become a manufacturing reality, while Breguet invented the tourbillon, a rotating device that counteracts the effects of gravity on a pocket watch, the pare-chute, a shock-absorber, and the flat balance-spring, also known as the Breguet overcoil. Japy later adapted the Lepine caliber and Breguet inventions to factory production, merging these new inventions with methods that would allow for mass replication.

Japy’s Influence

Since Japy made his home in the northern region of the Jura Mountains, his methodology quickly emigrated to the Swiss Jura region. As Swiss peasants at the time used the frigid winter months to tinker and craft watch parts for sale, Japy saw an opportunity in a readily available and skilled labor force. This marriage of skilled labor and advanced production would serve to sow the seeds of a timepiece primacy. Though a far cry from the authentic Swiss watches and luxury Swiss watch brands which have come to dominate the market, these early pioneers were the first practitioners in a field that would evolve into the Swiss watch market we know today.

Decentralized Labor and Cultural Centers

Close up of an old pocket watch timepieceSwitzerland’s decentralized labor force found the perfect match in a French concept known as “établissage”: the practice of expediting manufacturing by sourcing parts to various craftspeople and selling the final product under a single firm.

Geneva had long sourced the labor of the neighboring rural artisans, as Switzerland has a long history of decentralization (the Swiss Jura region’s incorporation was not a given until well into the 19th century). A rising hub of craftwork, Geneva was heavily influenced by the artistic influx of Protestant Huguenots, who, at the time, were fleeing persecution in Catholic France.

With their artistry and attention to detail transforming the aesthetics of Geneva and serving as the catalyst for its evolution into the nucleus of fine authentic Swiss watches, the Huguenots provided a standard of excellence in timepiece creation, while Swiss craftsmen from various villages and townships served to provide parts. As a result of this tradition, Swiss firms were able to take advantage of this organic implementation of établissage to compete with the German, French, and English markets—each centralized and heavily managed in manufacturing quarters of major European cities.

Swiss Watch Quality and Abundance

While authentic Swiss watches became plentiful, dominating Europe by sheer ubiquity (between 1800 and 1850, Switzerland saw a 1,000% increase in timepiece production), these Swiss chronometers were known pejoratively as ‘fake watches.’ Though they overwhelmed the stagnant English watch scene, flooded the market, and were widely sold and purchased, the timepieces imported from Switzerland failed to make a true impression at the time.

Ulysse Nardin buildingWhat the
établissage system leant in efficiency towards the production of authentic Swiss watches, it lacked in quality. Industrialization brought with it increased competition, and for the first time the affectations of newly-rich gentry—tailoring, accessories, and reliable timepieces—were in high demand. A change was on the horizon, in Switzerland culturally and in the world of watchmaking methodology. It was from the flaws in this early decentralized Swiss method that several leaders and innovators emerged who would revolutionize the way timepieces were crafted in the years to come.

The Emergence of Luxury

Luxury Swiss watch brands began with companies that eschewed the old methods in order to assemble the entirety of their timepieces with a dedicated group of permanently employed watchmakers. From this particular revolution, houses like Longines and IWC Schaffhausen emerged, albeit, under far different monikers in their early years. This new philosophy saw a turning point in Swiss horology, the first step on the long road to industry dominance that has defined the world of luxury timepieces as we know it today.

World War II was the turning point for Swiss horologists. Prior to the war, the American railroad system created a strong demand for precision timepieces, and the optimized American industrialization had forged America as the chief competition for the Swiss market.

America’s Dwindling Impact on the Watch Industry

Graham Chronofighter Oversize “Black Sahara” WatchAt the turn of the 20th century, authentic Swiss watch makers drew inspiration from industrial leaders like Florentine Jones, who brought American manufacturing techniques to Switzerland.

Jones, who set the groundwork for what became IWC Schaffhausen, arrived at a time when American-made pocket watches set the standard for timepieces. He found contemporaries among such giants as Graham, Glycine, and Ulysse Nardin.

During World War II, American factories turned their efforts to the war, and the dominance of American watchmaking came to an end. In this new era, Swiss firms began to perfect the ability to create high quality, expertly calibrated and reasonably priced authentic Swiss watches. With a newfound vision and the American factories shifting their focus almost solely to military manufacturing, Swiss watchmakers were able to corner the market.

High-end manufacturers such as Longines and Patek Philippe capitalized on the American methods of production and infused their own techniques to appeal to the growing luxury market in Western Europe and North America hungry for authentic Swiss watches.

Historied Quality, Modern Luxury

Ulysse Nardin Dual Manufacture WatchToday, new luxury markets around the world have emerged, giving
authentic Swiss watch manufacturers new audiences to captivate, while incorporating years of history into modern design. Though the days of an English and American supremacy in horology is over, luxury brands such as Graham London have merged London style with the precision of Switzerland’s historied brand of precision artistry. Carrying on the legacy of the eponymous George Graham, Graham Timepieces reflect the Enlightenment Era philosophies which birthed the firm: accuracy, innovation, and progress.

Pilot Watches

The Chronofighter model hearkens back to World War II when these precision pieces reflected not only unparalleled design, but the often life-saving precision required by pilots in Her Majesty’s Royal Air Force. Today, these timepieces boast Swiss manufacturing and English refinement, a rugged elegance that pays homage to the lineage of luxury Swiss watch brands.

Made from materials as high quality as they are durable, Graham’s authentic Swiss watches sport the latest innovations in horology, such as DLC and PVD coated rubber finishes. Scratch-resistant, anti-reflective sapphire crystal faces are housed within cases of ceramic and stainless steel. Like the traditional pieces upon which the design is based, the body of the watch utilizes state-of-the-art carbon fiber construction.

Dive Watches

Watchmaker working on a watch in workshopFrom the sky to the sea, Ulysse Nardin has a distinguished history of crafting marine chronometers. Sought throughout the world for their impeccable design and technological innovation, many of the timepieces from Ulysse Nardin are considered investment quality collection pieces. These pieces are known as both aesthetic and technological marvels, and each unique design showcases a commitment to advancement and dependability against which other brands are judged. Epitomizing the accuracy and refinement for which authentic Swiss watches are known, Ulysse Nardin is the firm responsible for C.O.S.C standard chronometers with advanced features such as:

  • A free-sprung balance wheel
  • Oil-free silicium escapement
  • A full balance bridge
  • Double pawl-winding system

Even the earliest iteration of Swiss manufacturing embraced innovation, accuracy, and durability. Keeping true time is a skill, and these precision timepieces are crafted as the finest of tools with which to do so. Like the adventurers, seamen, and soldiers who found a reliable friend in the timepieces of early Swiss production, the modern traveler will find a suitable chronometer among this collection.

The Power of Modern Authentic Swiss Watches

Rapport Mahogany Eight Watch BoxThe consensus among many watch experts envisions a future where Swiss watches are still on the forefront of the luxury timepiece industry, not because of quality and innovation, though Swiss watch brands have those in abundance, but because the industry is filled with giants, and to dethrone them would require an immense amount of capital.

Due to the acquisitions and consolidations, rampant in the watch business, many believe that it no longer matters whether a brand is Swiss, German, French, or Chinese, they will eventually merge into a much larger conglomerate of multiple nationalities.

The Luxury of Time: A Conversation About Timepieces

There are few certain things about modern living. The world moves faster and faster with each coming day. We’re online and plugged in at all hours, and to what end? What is considered luxurious in 2016? It could be a globe-trotting travel itinerary or a spacious home decorated to your taste. Or, is it the finer details of your day to day life? Luxury is time and the certain self-assurance that you’re forging your own path. Luxury is living according to your own schedule, beholden to no one. So, if your world moves according to your own time, then what about the instruments you use to measure it? As opulent or utilitarian as your style may be, there are certain basic facts about watches that can lead you to make the right choice when considering a timepiece to invest in.

1. What Makes Luxury Watches So Special?

True luxury watches are, no pun intended, timeless. While even the most style-focused tastemakers across the globe can consider watches to be frivolous, luxury watches aren’t as extravagant a purchase as one might assume.

In fact, depending on your lifestyle, a luxury watch can be a trusted necessity and staple. So, let’s discuss some of the benefits and facts about watches that can be overlooked when considering these valuable tools for those who value punctuality.

Luxury Watches Are Lifestyle Accessories

A true luxury watch is a symbol of prestige, power, and wealth. In today’s increasingly image-conscious world, those qualities can go a long way in your personal and professional endeavors. Consider a scenario that places you in a meeting with a potential business associate or partner. He’s wearing old, worn trousers and a wrinkled t-shirt. Would a reasonable professional be impressed enough to do business? But, what of a consummate industry-insider who dresses the part and can give you a leg up on the competition? Regardless of your profession, image matters and luxury watches offer an unspoken calling card in conveying class and distinction.

Luxury Watches Have Investment Potential

Since luxury watches are crafted from precious metals and materials, not only do they retain their value, but they can increase in worth over time if they’re kept in immaculate condition. While they may not be an obvious investment like real estate, vintage cars, or artwork, luxury watches do store value and add diversity to a financial portfolio.

While the commonly held notion of “buying low and selling high” doesn’t necessarily apply to luxury watch investments, procuring authentic vintage timepieces from reputable watchmakers such as Patek Philippe, Ulysse Nardin, or Rolex will ensure that your luxury watch retains and increases its value with care and maintenance.

According to a 2015 report detailing facts about watches in the vintage market, Time magazine found that the success in these brands’ high-value retention is the relatively limited range of their product lines. While certain brands continually produce a myriad of lines and models, notable premium watchmakers like Rolex keep production low in order to focus on their exquisite quality.

Luxury Watches Are Built to Last

Aside from obvious engineering and precision differences, collectors would be hard-pressed to find a moderately priced watch that runs strong a year or two after its initial purchase, let alone for a lifetime. Meanwhile, luxury watches are meticulously crafted to a level of mechanical excellence that ensures they can be true heirloom pieces that are passed down from generation to generation.

Some luxury watches can take years to produce, which is a true testament to the level of quality that collectors should expect. From effortless movement to precise construction and timeless design, the measure of true luxury watches is their staying power.

2. Know Your Luxury Watch Brands

With some fundamental knowledge on what makes luxury watches desirable, any collector should consider the brands and watchmakers that have produced these legendary pieces. Since the brands you champion can be a matter of personal preference, these basic facts about watches along with their reputations will aid you in your quest for knowledge. While trends come and go,

Now that you have a basic understanding of what makes luxury watches desirable, consider the brands and watchmakers that have shaped the industry. Obviously, the brands you champion are going to be a matter of preference, but these facts about watches and their reputations among timepiece aficionados should help you in your quest for knowledge while also providing some conversational points. Trends may come and go, but true style never gets old. Let’s go over some proven information on timeless timepieces.

Consider Investment Pieces From IWC or Franck Muller

While there are dozens of outstanding watch marques and brands available, two of the most widely respected luxury watch brands are IWC (International Watch Company) and Franck Muller.

These two renowned watchmakers have produced and continue to innovate luxury watches in terms of engineering, design, and craftsmanship. While they’re relatively less famous in the United States than household names such as Cartier or Rolex, these marques are no less reputable or respected.

IWC Specializes in Longevity and Excellence:

IWC can trace its storied past to 1868 when the company was founded by Florentine Ariosto Jones. The brand is notable among collectors as being the only major Swiss watch manufacturer founded in Eastern Switzerland, whereas most are based in the west.

Though IWC has been around for close to 150 years, the brand has continually innovated its mechanics, design, and sales. Since 1885, the company has kept immaculate records on each watch produced in their Swiss factory. Additionally, technological advances throughout the 20th century have only added to IWC’s reputation for excellence. During the mid-20th century, the brand introduced the revolutionary Caliber 89 movement, its famed mechanical movement that powered watches from the 1940s to the 1990s. Among vintage luxury watch circles, connoisseurs and collectors may even still find early models that function just as effortlessly as they did when they left the production line over 70 years ago.

Glycine

Founded in 1914 by Swiss watchmaker Eugene Meylan, Glycine set itself apart from other luxury brands through its focus on pure precision. Meylan was ahead of his time when he directed the firm to strive for technological progress in its timepieces.

This commitment to engineering would be a recurring theme for Glycine throughout the 20th century. History enthusiasts looking into facts about watches will be surprised that this Swiss watchmaker is well known for their timepieces designed for pilots. In the early 1950s, Glycine introduced The Airman, a 24-hour watch that worn by many US Air Force pilots during the Vietnam War.

Since then, Glycine has tirelessly innovated the art and science of watchmaking with automatic Airman models and mechanical watches known for their rugged reliability.

Franck Muller’s Fusion of Modern Style and Classic Mechanics:

Franck Muller is a relative newcomer to the luxury watch scene. Though the company was only founded in 1991, Muller has built a solid reputation for merging the perfection found in Swiss engineering with more modern American stylistic twists.

Worn by eminent cultural icons from Demi Moore to Elton John and 50 Cent, Franck Muller’s watches are noted for their intricate, unique engineering conceived by Muller himself. Many of Muller’s watches are distinguished for their rarified silhouettes such as an innovative “tonneau” curved rectangular shape introduced in 1993.

While Franck Muller has revolutionized modern luxury watches, he has also experimented with their distribution and marketing. Since 1993, Franck Muller has introduced “World Premieres,” exclusive collections centered on specialized features never before seen in the watchmaking industry. Details such as minute repeaters, perpetual calendars, and indicators measuring internal temperatures proved innovative and highlighted the brand and designer’s unique perspective on luxury watch design.

Panerai’s Timeless Appeal

Among the many facts about watches is the ebb and flow of their stylistic trends. As with any handcrafted designer product, trends come and go. However, in the world of timepieces, designers opt for styles that last. With that said, even the most modern watches will tend to echo and mirror classic designs from the early 20th century or earlier. Occasionally, these vintage styles will see a revival, leading to the values of certain watches and companies to rise and fall with changing tastes.

For example, the Italian watchmaker, Panerai, has only recently started to gain acclaim for its stories pieces despite the company being around since 1860.

Panerai tends to be a bold watch marque, relying on expressive, yet relatively simple silhouettes. The watchmaker is the official timepiece supplier to the Italian navy, yet was a fairly obscure brand until Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger popularized it in the United States in the 90s.

Ulysse Nardin

Ulysse Nardin has been a mainstay in luxury watches for over two centuries. The Swiss watchmaker made history with its highly precise marine chronometers, which were at one point supplied to 50 navies across the world. Since the 19th century, Ulysse Nardin has staked its reputation on eminently precise timepieces valued for their functionality, engineering, and Swiss styling.

In the 1980s, the company made history when it produced the Astrolabium Galileo Galilei. This game-changing watch had the ability to display time, lunar and solar eclipses, as well as the positions of several stars. With over 21 distinct functions, the watch was named the world’s most functional watch by the Guinness Book of World Records

Oris

Oris is a relatively new luxury timepiece company, founded in 1904. Though a smaller company, the brand managed to remain a truly unique voice in the industry. With an internal buyout in the 1980’s, the brand cemented its reputation for independence on all fronts.

Oris' freedom as an independent firm has allowed them to pursue their own unique vision, and they are one of the few Swiss watch companies in their price range that exclusively sells mechanical watches. The brand is also famous for receiving one of the single highest quality ratings from the COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute).

Popular Oris Timepieces:

  • Diver Date Black Dial
  • Hunter LE
  • Charlie Parker
  • Carlos Coste Chrono
  • 44 Regulateur

Terms to Reconsider

To keep up with the prestige set by luxury watches, mass-market timepieces typically boast a number of bells, whistles, and gimmicky features that may seem opulent to the untrained eye. However, true luxury watch aficionados should recognize that the difference between the two isn’t in the numerous amenities offered, but by the sheer quality and craftsmanship that goes into each timepiece.

Waterproof

There is a difference between “waterproof” and “water-resistant.” While many high-end watches that are waterproof, these are mainly for divers and Navy personnel, and professionals who spend significant amounts of time under wear.  Most luxury watches are water-resistant, meaning washing your hands or walking home in the rain shouldn’t be a problem. Just don’t go swimming with an heirloom quality Rolex or Tag Heuer that boasts “water resistance.”

Indiglo

While using your watch as a night light may be a fun feature that proves useful in dark interior environments or on an airplane, true luxury watches don’t need to rely on this feature. To compensate for this added visual appeal, luxury watches have faces designed for maximum readability and pin-point accuracy.

Terms to Know

Knowing facts about watches is only as good as your familiarity with the terminology watchmakers use. Horology can be complicated, so here are a few basic terms that industry insiders use when referring to different components and features:

  • The movement is the part of the watch that keeps time. It can be mechanical or electronic.
  • Complications are the bells and whistles that add excitement to mechanical movements. Examples of complications include chronographs, calendars, and date and time zone displays. Many watch buyers seek out complications that never actually get used.
  • The COSC, or the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres, is the industry-standard organization that tests Swiss timepieces for precision and accuracy. For some serious watch enthusiasts, a COSC certificate matching the timepiece's serial number is a must, although others say it has no relevance as far as quality.
  • A chronograph is a watch that also has a stopwatch function, allowing the user to measure a specific amount of time, rather than just telling the time of day.
  • A perpetual calendar differs from a standard calendar in that it doesn’t need to be adjusted, regardless of the month.
  • Winding refers to the mechanism that tightens the timepiece's mainspring by turning a small dial called the crown or winder. This can be done manually or by using a watch winder.
  • A watch winder is a device that keeps automatic (self-winding) watches running even when the user is not wearing it. This ensures the watch keeps the correct time and date at all times, eliminating the need to reset it after a period disuse.
  • The dial, also called the face, is the primary disk of the watch where the user views the time, date, and other complications.

Whiskey Watches and Watch Winders- Blog 1

Whiskey Watches & Winders Blog 1 - Intro Video Pic

We are so pleased to bring you our first blog of all things "Whiskey Watches and Watch Winders" which is near and dear to Craig's heart and topics that Mr. Zaligson thoroughly enjoys. If you have had the pleasure to visit us here at TimeScape and do business with Craig, he is always happy to share his honest opinion of all things watches and watch winders while sharing and enjoying a glass of fine single malt scotch with our patrons. This is how Craig has always done business.  The world of fine timepieces shouldn’t be stuffy or only for the few with disposable cash. Anyone who appreciates the intricacies, traditions history of horology and the meticulous nuances needed to produce fine timepieces and notable distilled spirits will relate and enjoy.

TimeScape has been in business since 1995 opening a one manned storefront in the suburbs of St. Louis Park, and then in 2003 relocating to the Minneapolis Hyatt Regency and having the famed Manny's Steak House as our neighbor. Craig originally started out in corporate America working with a national company in data compaction and storage to optical disk for the US Poison Control Center. That was when the IBM PC XT / 20 MB was the barnburner of the day. Craig came into the business of selling watches through his love and appreciation of mechanical timepieces and all things related to horology. Being well aware of the lack of dedicated watch stores in the Twin Cities, Craig found his niche and calling.  Hence TimeScape was born. With the help of his business partners, a famed local restaurateur, and a famous vodka distillery chairman, Craig expanded his business to benefit the true watch enthusiast that appreciated eclectic and diverse timepiece brands.

Most of the brands TimeScape featured were low production unique timepieces such as: Anonimo, Arnold & Son, Chronoswiss, Ernst Benz, Glycine, Graham-London, Giuliano Mazzuoli, Grand Seiko and Ulysse Nardin. Mainstream entry timepieces such as Hamilton, Longines and Movado were also added. Not only did he sell these high-end brands but wanted to offer care and maintenance of these fine timepieces becoming and authorized dealer to the top watch winder companies in the business which includes Buben & Zorweg, Scatola del Tempo, Orbita, Swiss Kubik, and Underwood of London. He then hired on an in house CSCM certified watchmaker to repair and service watches to become a full-fledged watch boutique.

In the world of electronics, smart phones and now smart watches there is something to be said about the labor and love and art of a fine timepiece with the many complications and variety. A small complicated little machine that takes a steady trained and tested hand to create and bring to life with the only power source being the movement of the wrist or winding of the crown. Fine timepieces are given life so as to be appreciated for many years and then passed down to the next generation.  A fine timepiece is wearable art for the wrist.

We have showcased and hosted many events and continue to try and bring the world of fine timepieces to everyone. In 2013 we were pleased to sponsor the J24 US National Championship Races at the Wayzata Yacht Club at Lake Minnetonka and have hosted events with the British watchmakers of Bremont, featuring a British theme of English cheeses, port wine and stout ale. We have also featured events with Arnold & Son, hosted a private dinner with F.P Journe at the elegant Banks restaurant. We have been invited to and attended the Draw Party for the TCP 3M US Senior Championship Golf tour several times, and regularly feature our pilot's watches at the Flying Cloud Airport AirExpo Aviation Show. We have hosted several #REDBARMSP events, a get together for the local watch enthusiasts and attended First Thursday's Lavender Happy Hour Events. We also created our own Whiskey and Watches tasting event to coincide with our Watch Fair and yearly sale with a diverse tasting menu of unique whiskeys.  And lastly we have even been featured in the local Edina Magazine and sponsored and gifted the Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal Executive of the Year recipient a Ulysse Nardin Dual Time wrist watch. We have showcased and hosted many events and continue to try and bring the world of fine timepieces to everyone.

We are now located in the heart of the luxury shopping district of Edina Minnesota and have come into our own and look to continue to grow and evolve. Being in the watch business for 20 years we have seen much change and growth and want to share our knowledge and experience in watches and watch winders and make the experience fun and enjoyable to you out there who might just started discovering the world of wrist watches. I hope you will subscribe to our YouTube channel to get the latest blog videos and continue to follow us here. We always appreciate opinions and suggestions of what you want to see next.
